events

Aug 21 (Thur) - ALIEN and ALIENS screen at the Egyptian (7:30pm, $10)

Aug 22 (Fri) - FAT GIRL screens at the Silent Movie Theatre (7:30pm, $10)

Aug 23 (Sat) - THE GERMS and THE MAE-SHI play the Echo (doors 8:30, $17 in advance)

Aug 23rd (Sat) - LAST MAN ON EARTH and THE OMEGA MAN and TWELVE MONKEYS screen at the Aero (7:30pm, $10)

Aug 23 (Sat) - SHAKMA screens at the Silent Movie Theatre (10:00pm, $10)
Roddy McDowell vs. Killer Baboons.

Aug 24 + 25 (Sun/Mon) - RADIOHEAD at the Hollywood Bowl (doors 7:00, tickets $39 and up)
I'm gonna just say it, seeing Radiohead in a large arena just doesn't make sense to me. I saw them here in 2002; tickets were north of $50 for the worst seats, and I was starting at the video monitor screens more than the actual stage. This is one of those sitations where if some random hook up was to bestow good seats onto me, it'd be worth it. But it's just not music that I want to sit far away from, and for that much money.

Aug 27 (Wed) - INFORMATION SOCIETY play the Viper Room (doors 8:00, $20)
What?!?!?!?!?! I would only go to this if there is a guarantee in writing that they perform only while dressed head to toe in a solitary neon color.

August 29 (Fri) - RATCATCHER screens at the Silent Movie Theatre (7:30pm, $10)

Aug 29 (Fri) - THE WARRIORS screens at the Nuart (midnight, $10)

Sept 5 (Fri) - FRIDAY THE 13th: THE FINAL CHAPTER screens at the Nuart (midnight, $10)

Sept 5 (Fri) CLASS and WEIRD SCIENCE screen at the Silent Movie Theatre (10:15pm, $10)

Sept 6 (Sat) - IRON MAN screens at the Aero with Live Commentary (7:30pm, $10)

Sept 9 (Tues) - MOGWAI at the Wiltern (9:00pm, tickets $22.50 plus Ticketmaster fees)

Sept 10 (Weds) - BURN AFTER READING and FARGO screen at the Aero (7:30pm, $10)

Sept 9 + 10 - RATATAT at the Henry Fonda (8:00pm, $25.75)
If you've never seen 'em, Ratatat always play a great show. The only bummer about seeing them is that you know that much of what you're hearing is coming from a tape backup. It's kind of cheating.

Sept 10 + 11 - BUILT TO SPILL and QUASI at the Troubadour (doors 8:00, tickets $25 in advance or at the door)
This is one of those "see them play the album in it's entirety" kind of shows. I'm not a huge fan of Built to Spill, so to pay this much money really just to catch Quasi on a school night, it's just not my bag.

Sept 12 (Fri) - MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATRE 3000: THE MOVIE screens at the Nuart (midnight, $10)
MST3K was like a religion to me in high school. I remember being disappointed with MST3K: The Movie simply because despite being able to see Crow say the word "Dickhead" (which he couldn't do on Comedy Central), it simply wasn't as funny as many of the episodes. I would trade This Island Earth for Manos The Hands of Fate, Pod People, or Laserblast any day of the week.

Sept 13 (Sat) - SHOWGIRLS screens at the New Bev (midnight, $7)

Sept 14 (Sun) - BLUE THUNDER and WARGAMES screen at the Aero (7:30pm, $10)

Sept 14 (Sun) - BEAT STREET and BREAKIN' screen at the Silent Movie Theatre (8pm, $12)

Sept 19 (Fri) - FRIGHT NIGHT screens at the Nuart (midnight, $10)
The director and three lead actors will be in attendance.

Sept 20 - BECK and SPOON and MGMT at the Hollywood Bowl (doors 7:00, tickets $40 and up)
This is one of those expensive shows that might actually be worth it. We saw Beck at the ExPlex late last year, and were right in the front, and for only $20. So to pay this much to sit that far away doesn't seem ideal. But throw Spoon and Mgmt in the mix, the list of pros and cons evens out. Especially on a Saturday night, this might be one of those shows that is worth splurging for.

Sept 26 (Fri) - THE GOONIES screens at the Nuart (midnight, $10)

Sept 27 (Sat) - OVER THE TOP screens at the New Bev (midnight, $7)

Oct 4 (Sat) - THE SWELL SEASON and IRON AND WINE at the Greek (doors 7:30, tickets $47.65 and up)
This is another situation, where it's definitely expensive, but is probably going to be a great show, and it's on a Saturday night. I really liked Once, and would love to hear that music live. I hope they are still passionate about these songs.

Oct 4 (Sat) - HARD TO KILL screens at the New Bev (midnight, $7)

Oct 10 (Fri) - CLUE screens at the Nuart (midnight, $10)
Apparently the Rocky Horror kids perform the movie during the movie. Whether that's fun or annoying or both is to be determined.

Oct 23 (Thur) - STEREOLAB at the Henry Fonda (doors 8:00, tickets $35.30)
Gosh, I have always wanted to see Stereolab, and if this was on a Friday or Saturday, might actually be inclined to pay this much. As it stands, it's just far too expensive to go out on a school night for this.
